Para-badminton's new stars train here

One accessible court, a coach who redrew his drills, and a wheelchair rally that silences the hall every evening at seven.

The academy's sixth court was rebuilt quietly two years ago: ramped access, a smoother surface, storage for sports chairs. What happened next was not quiet at all — a para-badminton programme whose players now stop passers-by mid-stride.

The coach relearned his own sport to build it. Wheelchair badminton reverses instincts: the half-court game rewards depth over width, turning speed over reach, and a defensive lob that able-bodied players never bother mastering. He filmed himself in a chair for a month before coaching anyone.

The programme's senior pair train with national ambitions and club-level humour. Their signature rally — chair pivots, deception at the net, a kill smash from sitting height — has become the hall's unofficial 7 pm show, applauded by strangers through the mesh.

Equipment costs remain the barrier; sports chairs cost multiples of any racquet. The academy's answer is a shared fleet and a donations wall that fills, the manager notes, fastest in the week after anyone watches that rally.
